Annual Meeting notes

Some notes from our 2009 Annual Meeting:

  • We’re proud to have serviced nearly 200 bikes at our free tune-up events this summer
  • We were able to do 3 of those tune-up events completely by bicycle–thanks to New Belgium Brewery and their grant, and an in-kind donation from Burley, makers of the cargo trailers we purchased
  • We’re happy to have the support of individual donors and local businesses who provide much needed financial backing for our programs, purchase of tools, supplies, insurance, and regular maintenance
  • This fall marks the start of a partnership with SCC and our first work-study employee
  • New programs are in the works: ladies and other mechanics classes, thanks to the support of local professional bike mechanics
  • And our move to a more central location on east Sprague is forthcoming!

New Program at P2P

This winter P2P will be offering a Ladies Wrenching Class. Each class will cover a major bike component, include instruction, practice, and will be taught by local pro bike mechanic, John Gaz. John has over 20 years of experience in bike mechanics, knows how teach so people can learn, and his sense of humor and love of bikes are evident . Ladies, you don’t want to miss this opportunity!

Check back often to see more details about dates, prices, and location.

Annual Meeting

Our annual meeting will be held on Sunday, October 25th at 4pm. The location is 453 W 26th Ave. Everyone is invited. Please send an email to pedals2people@gmail.com to let us know you plan on coming. We need to how much hot food to prepare and how many cold drinks to buy!

See you then!

Upcoming P2P Move

P2P fans and volunteers,

We’re getting ready for our big move this fall, and as with any move, we asking our friends to help us and lighten our load.

If you have a truck and want to help with the actual move,
If you have a bike with a basket, panniers, buckets or cargo capacity,
If you want to help us organize and pack in preparation for the move,
If you’re interested in cleaning and beautifying,
or all of the above..

Just email us or call and we’ll get in touch with you! pedals2people@gmail.com 842-6597

We’ll be
hosting some volunteer nights in October for pre-move-in, a ride to the
new shop for folks who want to haul stuff by bike, and a move-by-truck
day for big stuff like shelving and work tables.

Thanks–your support is so greatly appreciated

(p.s. don’t forget to check our blog and calendar for updates)

Upcoming Annual Meeting: October 25th at 4 pm

Pedals2People’s annual public meeting is scheduled for Sunday, Oct 25th at 4pm. We will be hosting a casual dinner, and we’ll let our supporters know what’s upcoming for the next year. I think most of you know that we’re moving to a more central location. This move and our continued educational programs and outreach services will cover some of the things we’ll be talking about.

Stay tuned for the location, and please mark you calendars for now!

Open Shop Hours This Saturday!

P2P volunteer Ryan will be opening the shop this Saturday from 11 am to 4pm.

This is the first ever weekend shift, so please come up and let Ryan if you want to happen again. I’ve heard from folks before who haven’t been able to make it to the shop because they work evenings. Hopefully we can offer more Saturday open-shops if this is a popular day!

Hillyard Fest 09

Hillyard knows how to rally the troops and get people out for an event. Even amongst the mega construction on Market St and the spotty weather, people came for the parade, food and entertainment. Kiwanis had a strong presence, as did the local politicians. The Hillyard Belles preformed, and many vendors sold their wares.

This was our first time at Hilllyard Fest, and if the festival is any indication of the neighborhood flavor and trends, bikes are big in this part of town. They were featured in the parade. Kiwanis raffled 2 kids bikes and gave out free helmets. Spokefest put on a bike rodeo for the kiddos and organized a community bike ride. We were there to tune up bikes, and between fixes, we caught glimpes of the bike (and skate) tricks at the popular public skate park.

Hillyard is so cool for accepting what others thought a controversial park feature. When the city presented different neighborhoods with hosting a skate park back in 2002, Hillyard was the only neighborhood willing to accept the offer. What a great place for kids and their families. It’s the main feature at Harmon park and is obviously well-loved!

First Time Voluneer Experience

If you’ve never volunteered with P2P before, but you want to–especially during a fun event like the Free Tune-Up at this year’s Hillyard Festival–then please email me at pedals2people@gmail.com!!

We have super-star mechanics lined up for the event, but we’re hoping to reach new folks with these skills or interests:

  • good with people
  • enjoy working with kiddos
  • interested in learning how to fix a flat
  • like collecting data and organizing it
  • love being in a host/hostess role where you greet people and put them at ease while their bikes are being worked on

This will be a great event that showcases the Hillyard community, history and spirit. Come be a part of the celebration!

Ladies Night and Fundraiser Pics

P2P hosted Ladies Night on Thursday, and it was success: lots of ladies and bikes to be worked on. Beth and I weren’t sure what kind of turnout we’d get, so we were happy when 5 ladies joined us for some basic bike maintenance, like hubs, headsets and chain cleaning and lubing. It was warm, so we decided to set up shop in the alley, nice! Next month, 4th Thursday at 7, we’ll do it again!

Here’re some pics from our fundraiser dinner. We haven’t posted our own pics in a while. I hope to keep this up, since photos say so much.
