Burley Pitches in Too!
02 July 09 08:23 PM | Liza

We just want to thank Burley Design, makers of high-quality bike trailers, for their generous in-kind donation.  Burley's donation enabled us to stretch the grant money from New Belgium to purchase two more trailers than we were planning on buying. We purchased four Flatbed bike trailers, and we are busy getting the tools and supplies to equip them. We cannot wait to start pedaling (not merely peddling :) a message of sustainable transportation, empowerment and building healthier communities!

We've Got Funding!
20 June 09 02:49 PM | Liza

P2P was awarded $2300 from New Belgium Brewing Co to purchase tools and supplies to outfit our new Mobile Tune-Up Units. Whoo-hoo--thank you NB for believing in us and what we do!

This is our third year of offering free bike tune-ups in Spokane. P2P connects with neighborhood groups and takes part in several community events each summer. We bring tools and parts, and our volunteers work tirelessly to get bikes safe and ride-able for many thankful kiddos and adults. Last year we serviced nearly 150 bicycles.

Typical at our tune-up events are tires to change, flats to patch, and gears and brakes to adjust. These fixes yield immediate results, which are so satisfying. We love these events in our community, and we hope to do them for many more years.

With our NB grant, we're going to restructure the tune-ups so we can do 2 things: smaller, more impromptu tune-ups by bike and offer additional services like classes to small groups. This means we'll be purchasing Burley cargo trailers, Park folding bike stands and tools, and other supplies. The streamlined mobile component is so important to us as we model what practical cycling looks like, how sustainable transportation works, and why these things are central to empowering people and building healthier communities.

Call for Submissions
26 May 09 08:18 PM | Liza

Pedals2People is looking for submissions from local artists to adorn spoke cards for this year's SpokeFest. SpokeFest debuted as Spokane's own bike festival last year with over 1200 people registered. This September 13th, SpokeFest is anticipating many more participants, and they want to give all those who register a fun momento.

The spoke cards will include your work and your name. They will be distributed to several thousand enthusiastic cyclists, and your card might just become a highly sought-after trading card ;) Here's what we're looking for in this year's design:

  1. must have SpokeFest 09 in the design
  2. when sending a digital image, best if the quality is at least 300 dpi (dots per inch) and no smaller than 4 inches by 4 inches.
  3. original artwork can be scanned, but should be 8.5x11" or smaller
  4. can be full-color or BW
  5. look at the SpokeFest and Pedals2People sites to get an idea about what your work is representing
  6. email your work or questions to pedals2people@gmail.com
  7. must be submitted by July 1
That's it! More than one design may be chosen to represent SpokeFest, Pedals2People and bike merriment.

Build-a-Beater Program Update
19 May 09 11:42 AM | Liza

P2P offers a program called Build a Beater (BAB). For $50 you can purchase a used bike frame, parts, and one month's worth of shop time to completely build a beater: a good-enough bike to get you around town. It's a great program, and it's been popular with do-it-yourselfers and people who're interested in building a bike that is uniquely theirs.

If you're looking to build a older mountain bike or step-thru ladies bike for your commute, then we can still provide the BAB program to you. However, if you're hoping to build a fixie, you'll have to check back later because we're out of road bike frames. Until we get more donations, that part of the BAB isn't available.

We still sell complete bikes, tons of used parts, and of course we have open shop hours available all spring and summer. Check our calendar for days and times.

Please give us a call if you'd like to make a donation 842-6597.

Bike to Work (or Where ever) Wednesday
13 May 09 10:59 AM | Liza

Today was a lot of fun--a double dose of bike cheer with two great events: Walk n' Roll to School Day and an Energizer Station for commuters.

Plum Tree School helped with both of these events. For Walk n' Roll to School Day, we worked with Plum Tree teachers earlier this month to promote biking as a fun, Earth-friendly, and empowering mode of transportation. PT teachers got the kids focused and excited to participate today in the walking and rolling, and nearly everyone made it to school by foot or by wheel! Check out John's pics.

We cheered for folks as they arrived or passed us on their way to work. One woman even stopped on the way home FROM her work at Sacred Heart. We're glad she rode up the hill and stopped for coffee and treats. Total number of participants = 20 riders and 6 walkers--a great turn out!

Only two more days of BTW left, so get out there and ride!

Monday starts Bike to Whatever (BTW) Week
08 May 09 09:14 AM | Liza

It's usually referred to as Bike to Work week, but Spokane is branching out this year and making May 10-16th, Bike To Whatever week: bike to eat, bike to play, bike to school, bike to shop. You get the idea : ) This opens BTW to college students, school kids, stay-at-home or work-from-home folk, retirees, and everyone else. Why limit the possibilities to biking to work only?

Please check out the BiketoWorkSpokane website for all the cool happenings! Monday morning at Riverfront Park marks the kick off with a free pancake breakfast.

And if you commute from the south hill, come by our energizer booth on Wednesday for some homemade goodies, coffee from Apple Charlotte Cooking Co, and spoke cards designed by local artist, Patrick Sullivan--Corner of 20th and Sherman at Plum Tree School.

Get Your Gear On
30 April 09 02:14 PM | Liza

Do you need some gear? Are you into human-powered fun and adventure? Then mark this on your calendar: May 16-17th, 10 Million Dollar Sale.

Mountain Gear carries primo adventure gear, and this huge sale only happens once a year. Besides the great products, Mtn Gear is a local business that believes in and works towards sustainability and building community. If you try to support local businesses that do good things in your community and you're looking for some bargain gear, then don't miss the sale.

This is an unusual post for us, but Mountain Gear is an unusual company. They've been a huge supporter of P2P since we first started out. Mountain Gear steps up to support way more outdoor and environmental-related projects than any other local company that I know of. They are quick to lend a hand of support by donating money, staff, resources and space. Mountain Gear makes Spokane a better place to live and play for all of us. We're happy to help Mountain Gear get the word out on this sale.

A Lively Weekend
27 April 09 12:16 PM | Liza

P2P was welcomed back to West Central Neighbor Days where we tuned up over 40 bikes for kids and adults on Saturday. The West Central Community Center puts together this event every spring to educate and bring together neighbors who might be interested in mentoring programs, youth sports, community gardens and other resources. We love being a part of this annual event. Check out the great video by Hank, showing some of the action, and pictures by Lisa.

Saturday night we also got to be a part of the Earth Day pre-party at Empyrean, where they're doing great things to foster a vibrant music and art scene in downtown Spokane. Eco-movies were showcased, and Ester Holms read from her book of poetry. Johanna Kunin, Olive Green, and Alexandra McKay brought some home-spun sounds to the venue.  Sorry if you missed the party; it was a lot of fun.

Spokane officially celebrated Earth Day on Sunday afternoon. P2P board member, Jace Bylenga was the main organizer for this celebration. As well as bringing together a ton of local non-profits who are working to educate folks and work towards a more sustainable model of living and doing business, the event really tried to reach the children. Hula hoops, face painting, paper-making from recycled materials, drought-tolerant flower seeds, yoga postures and so much more were brought to the park to especially engage the littlest members of the crowd. The efforts were well received. I hope this event gets bigger every year!

Thanks Again and New Friends
15 April 09 11:21 AM | Liza

Thanks to the folks at the Steam Plant for hosting an awesome Paris-Roubaix fundraising party. They really made the whole event happen. The food was yummy (have you tried the fish tacos?!), the service was fast, and the room was cozy and totally comfortable. These guys even opened up early on Easter Sunday for us! And of course thank you to everyone who came to support Pedals2People and our educational programs.

Check out New Belgium Brewery's link on our friend page. They're contributing to our Earth Day Pre-Party Concert with Johanna Kunin at the Empyrean April 25th!
